Anthony MannAn intensely satisfying drama of rugged primitive justice, "The Man from Laramie" marked the final, and finest, collaboration of one of the most important teams in Western films: director Anthony Mann and star Jimmy Stewart. Together this perfectly-matched pair provided audiences with eight classic pictures, including "Winchester '73" and "Strategic Air Command." Under Mann's superb direction, Stewart departs from his well-loved "ordinary hero" role and gives a riveting performance as a resolute vigilante obsessed with finding the man responsible for his brother's death. Among the suspects are an arrogant cattle baron (Donald Crisp), his sadistic son (Alex Nicol) and his ranch foreman (Arthur Kennedy, in the best performance of his career). Among the first Westerns filmed in CinemaScope, "The Man from Laramie" uses the widescr
Andrew V. McLaglenWayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on THE QUIET MAN. As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock's chauvinistic attempts to "tame" his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. The ultimate example of this comes at the end of the film when McLintock settles his marital dispute by publicly "spanking" his wife in what is now a notorious cinematic moment.

Sam PeckinpahSam Peckinpah's first big-budget film was also the first to be taken away and released in a shortened version. But now, 40 years later, most of the missing footage has been located and reinserted with the entire soundtrack remixed in 5.1 Dolby Digital, and a completely new score composed. The new scenes complete the electrifying depiction of an oppressive Union officer who leads a squad of Rebel prisoners, ex-slaves, and criminals into Mexico to hunt down a band of murdering Apaches which raises the question: who represents a greater threat?

Corral.

John WayneIn 1836, 187 Americans and Texicans stood against the attack of Santa Ana's 7,000-man army for more than 13 days. This epic film deals with how those men happened to be inside the mission--now a converted fort--in the small village of San Antonio, Texas, and how this led to the tragedy at The Alamo. The historical players at the fort include Davy Crockett (John Wayne--who also produced and directed the film with the uncredited assistance of John Ford), James Bowie (Richard Widmark), Sam Houston (Richard Boone) and Col. William Travis (Laurence Harvey). The film is historically faithful (as few films are) to the historical events. The final battle scene (attributed to John Ford) is a classic of its kind. The film's celebrated music is by Dimitri Tiomkin.

Michael WinnerCharles Bronson (The Magnificent Seven) and Academy Award® winner Jack Palance (City Slickers) star in a magnificent western as wild and untamed as the Old West itself. Bristling with dynamic action sequences and riveting performances, Chato's Land is a bold, sweeping tale of passion, vengeance and cold-blooded murder. Chato (Bronson) is a half-breed Apache Indian who treads the line between two cultures, balancing allegiance to his tribe with the allure of the white man's world. But when Chato kills a vicious sheriff in self-defense, he finds himself hunted by a posse led by the ruthless Quincey Whitmore (Palance), a former Confederate soldier who is determined to see him hang. It's 13 men against one, but the odds shift in Chato's favor when he leads his pursuers into Apache territory, where the harsh, cruel countryside can kill as surely as a gunman's bullet.

Arthur PennThis unusually gritty Western about gunslinger William Bonney, better known as "Billy the Kid," portrays Bonney as he is historically known to have been: illiterate, unintelligent and homicidal. When the rancher is killed, Bonney goes on a murderous rampage to avenge his friend, which leads head-long to a confrontation with Pat Garrett, the man who would finally gun him down. Based on the play by Gore Vidal, this Western classic stars Academy Award-winner Paul Newman ("Message in a Bottle," "The Hudsucker Proxy") as William Bonney, Lita Milan ("I Mobster," "Never Love a Stranger"), and John Dehner("The Right Stuff," "The Boys from Brazil").
