  • Amazing, addictive tv show

Brilliant acting and fantastic writing bring this show to life. The characters of Miss Lister and Miss Walker was so believable, and their on-screen chemistry gave us a complicated and imperfect relationship that was a joy to follow. It's also great to see a historical drama with lesbian storyline on mainstream television. Loved every episode, already decided to rewatch it.

This is a brilliant depiction of the diary of Anne Lister. Sally Wainright has brought the story to life, she made a fantastic choice in playing Suranne Jones in the lead role and the perfect foil in Sophie Rundle. Season 2 will be out next year.
  • Fantastic!!!

I absolutely loved this series. Cleverly written with the depth, wit and intrigue of a typical British period drama but also refreshingly different and with a twist of subtle dry humour throughout. Fabulous acting a clever script and plot and a wonderful finale, it really has it all. I do hope the do a series 2.

This series shows what it was like to be a gay female in the period just before Victoria was enthroned (ca 1835). Based on the diaries of a real person, Anne Lister, we are offered a glimpse into the society and culture of this male dominated era when it confronts a very special woman. Interestingly, Queen Victoria ruled ‘her’ immense Empire, on which the sun never set, but she personally, as a female, couldn’t vote and was really less ‘powerful’ than most ‘low born’ males within Britain, and this status persisted throughout her lengthy 60 year reign! Anne Lister however shows us, with her courage and individualism, how she coped with the era she was born into, and then how she forced it to deal with her :-). She was fortunate when being born into the upper social classes, but more importantly in having the unconditional loving support of her lovely family and household. I’ve watched Series One through twice now and very much enjoyed it... hope there may be a Series 2, but am unsure as that must be dictated by where Anne’s diary ended...
