Description

This classic rock opera is brought energetically to life by an outstanding cast including many stars of the rock music industry. Told through the remarkable music of The Who, this is the story of Tommy, who, when just a boy of six, witnessed the murder of his father by his mother (Ann-Margaret) and her lover (Oliver Reed). They command him, "You didn't hear it, you didn't see it, and you won't say anything to anyone." As a result, the traumatized boy retreats into the shadows of his mind and becomes deaf, dumb and blind. Growing into manhood. Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is subjected to several bizarre cure attempts by The Acid Queen (Tina Turner), the Preacher (Eric Clapton), and the Specialist (Jack Nicholson). In spite of his handicap, Tommy defeats the Pinball Wizard (Elton John) and becomes the champ, attaining a devoted following. When he is finally cured, he is hailed by his fans as a "Messiah."

Rent this movie first... Some people, such as myself, don't like musicals. This one is GREAT! Plus, let's face it, even though she's old enough to be my mother, Ann-Margaret was a SEXY BEAST in this film.

I went to the premier and met Keith Moon and Pete. I was totally hyped when this movie was released. I saw this twice at The Ziefgeld. At the time, I did enjoy the film. The original LP is one of my favorite recordings of all time. I find the film unwatchable today. It is over the top, and in parts, feels amatuerish. The music is good but none of the soundtrack surpasses the original

It's a mixed bag--some of it is very campy, but there are some musical performances that are topnotch: Elton John's version of "Pinball Wizard", and Clapton's version of "Eyesight to the Blind" was good enough that he performed it whie touring in the 70's. ANy Roger Daltry was probably in his vocal prime while this was recorded.

The story was changes too much and the songs were too changed. It just stunk. Buy the 1969 album and don't ruin your thoughts of The Who with this junk.
