The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic musical comedy of mistaken identity, comes swashbuckling to the screen with all the laughs, songs and stars that made it a long-running Broadway smash! Kevin Kline reprises his Tony Award winning role along with Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose and Rex Smith in the story of a roguish pirate king and his adventurous young charge who explore the coastline in search of treasure and romance. Digitally remastered for optimum picture quality, it’s a fresh, funny and colorful extravaganza that’s the very model of a modern movie musical.

  • A Musical Gem!!!!

This version of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" is the best production I have ever seen. I have seen many broadway show and I've seen many musicals made into movies. This one tops them all in wit, humor, and musical excitement. I first saw this on A&E back in the 90s and fell in love with it ever since. It introduced me to the great Gilbert & Sullivan and for that I will always be grateful. This is a true musical gem!!!!!!!

  • Fun, laughter and entertaining!!!

This movie was orchestrated to have a good laugh and keep your attention throughout it's sequence. It may not be to the letter of G&S script (but this also happens to many great movies), however it is one to sit and enjoy. Kevin, Rex, Angela, Linda, George, Tony, and the rest of the cast, all did an outstanding performance. They must have had fun during filming. I wish to meet them some day. My family and I have watched this movie since it first came out in 1983 while in Connecticut. We all remember it with sweet memories.
  • I really WANTED to like this

It is very clear that they had a great time with staging- and they really got the farce element of G&S. But I was very disappointed that they would cut out verses in the libretto which added much in order to make room for silliness that added nothing to the story. Also- some of the key roles were recast and I thought were poor choices. The part of the police chief, for instance, is written for a bass/ baritone but they made him a tenor and a dancing fool. Others may prefer the variety- but I was a little disappointed. There is plenty to do in the staging, interpretation and choreography to make a production unique without monkeying around with the core of the piece. It's fun, but for longtime fans who know the libretto and the original production- it falls a bit short.
