On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union suffered a massive explosion that released radioactive material across Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, and as far as Scandinavia and western Europe. Chernobyl is a gripping five-part miniseries that tells the powerful and visceral story of the worst man-made accident in history, following the tragedy from the moment of the early-morning explosion through the chaos and loss of life in the ensuing days, weeks and months. Approaching the story from every angle, encompassing the perspectives of plant workers, firemen, doctors, scientists, residents and Soviet bureaucrats, the miniseries juxtaposes compelling human stories of bravery and sacrifice with the shocking inertia of a government intent on passing blame and downplaying the dangers of the disaster. Featuring an ensemble cast led by Jared Harris (Emmy nominee for Mad Men), Stellan Skarsgård (Melancholia) and Emily Watson (Oscar nominee for Hilary and Jackie and Breaking the Waves), Chernobyl is written by Craig Mazin (The Huntsman: Winter's War) and directed by Johan Renck (Breaking Bad).

The best thing I ever watch
  • Best. Show. Ever.

This is officially my new favorite show, as it showed a lot of great details, and truly focused on the event that changed the course of history at a time where political tensions were really high. The cast was 100% superb, as the rest of the crew and the writer and researchers. Obviously they didn’t get their Emmy awards for nothing, and they better win more. Although I do wish there were a second season (to show the lives of the main characters after the trial and how they were affected), I am grateful enough for this series as it is. So, thank you to HBO and those involved. I’ll definitely watch this again!!!

Truly an eye opening show. There were moments I was not sure I could continue watching but this story needs to be told. The ego of the Russian government during this time is, without question, alarming. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Highly recommend.
  • One of the best mini series I’ve seen.

This was fantastic. The pacing was spot on. You really feel the dread in the atmosphere the whole way through. Granted a lot has been dramatized for the show but at least they acknowledged it at the end. This needs to be on everyone’s watch list this year.
  • Perfection

I don’t really know what to say other than.... this stuff (for the most part) actually happened. It’s riveting to hear the story played out in a docu-drama. For me, this was hands down the best series of the year.
  • Simply Amazing

This show is definitely a dramatization, but it is incredible to watch over and over again. Each time you catch a previously missed nuance, or learn a new fact. The acting, direction, and overall execution of this series is simply amazing.

I've now wathced the series 3 times and listened to the podcasts. I remember 1986. I was a high school senior. This was a big eye opener then, but the drama and the humaity of this is hard to put into words. Needs to be watched, over and over.
