Thank you ITunes for adding this must view classic series to your catalogue. Witty, charismatic, quirky, off beat surrealism run riot. The leads have panache and star quality, the guest artists are the creme de la creme and this series should have everyone's champagne corks popping with delight!

I saw The Avengers in the wrong order in the 1980s, only coming to the black-and-white episodes after seeing the colour ones. The first Diana Rigg season, the first to be shot on 35mm film, looks glorious in black-and-white and high definition. There's, fittingly, still a slightly darker streak to these early filmed episodes, lingering from the more dramatic Honor Blackman and Ian Hendry shows, but the macabre sense of the bizarre we came to know and love is there too. Patrick Macnee is in full mid-1960s swing as Steed and 'new girl' Diana Rigg effortlessly gives the impression she's always been there. It's hard to imagine how odd it must have seemed to 1960s viewers of the previous shows, which were shot in studio, sometimes live, to see this much more expensive film show arrive a few months after Honor Blackman left to star in Goldfinger. Laurie Johnson's iconic theme tune also debuts, replacing Johnny Dankworth's moody intro theme, presaging a lighter feel to the stories. Hopefully we'll get to see the existing episodes from the original three seasons in SD on iTunes soon. Marvellous work; the fabulous HD versions of the three filmed seasons make watching The Avengers feel like 'seeing it again for the first time!' ;) A whole new lease of life.
