In mid-19th Century Japan the era of the samurai is beginning to fade as the feudal nation begins to enjoy a rare period of peace. But the fragile calm is soon threatened by the bloody rise of Lord Naritsugu, the Shogun's sadistic, psychopathic younger brother, whose position places him above the law and free to rape, mutilate and murder on a whim. Concerned that Naritsugu's actions will eventually destroy the Shogunate, top Shogun official Sir Doi covertly calls on esteemed and noble samurai warrior Shinzaemon Shimada to assassinate the evil Lord before it is too late. Shinzaemon willingly agrees and immediately gathers together an elite group of samurai to assist him in the task, knowing that what they are about to embark upon may well prove to be a suicide mission.

  • Best Samurai film since Kurosawa.

Phenomenal. Better than Takeshi's Zatoichi. This film has instantly cemented its place in the pantheon of great Samurai movies.
  • Brilliant film, Inspired by Seven Samurai

    By The Purple Witch
This is essentially The Seven Samurai without the farmers… and with additional swordsmen (of course) and not fixed to one place.. Great characters (one or two copied straight out of 7 Samurai)…but who cares! This is such a brilliant movie, and damn it, I want more!!!!

  • Epic!

This is the BEST movie I have watched for some time. A great insight into Japanese culture and society of yesteryear (1840's) with drama from the word go! Great period sets, great acting and fighting. Not a touch of Hollywood here and its better for it. I rented this movie and now wish I had bought it. Watched it three times before iTunes deleted it!
  • Excellent Film in any language

A terrific piece of film making with actors truly relishing in their roles. The story's parallels to war, wealth and power today are ever so present in the film and in many ways reveals the disconnects that those in power have for their people. The crafting of this film is methodical and precise yet unleashes absolute mayhem when on full throttle. There are so many levels that you can see this film on: loyalty (both flawed and true), brotherhood, sacrifice, burden, action, strategy... and delivered with simplicity and exactitude. A definite must-see.
  • It’s a Samurai film….

    By J.popcorn
It’s got a heavy build in terms of early plot work, and i think that might put off a few of the fans of… say ‘Fast & Furious’ and such films. But the resultant pay off is superb. Yes it’s subtitled. If you can’t read and watch a movie, then I’m confused, but you’ll be more confused. This film is quality if you like the genre and it’s still a good movie if you’re not a fan of the genre.
  • Seems decent

The first fifty minutes of this film are pretty good. Unfortunately i cannot watch anymore than that since it constantly freezes in the same place each time, but no one else seems to be having this problem so I assume it's Itunes or my computer. Other than that, not a bad buy
  • Total Massacre

Loved the film. The beginning was hard to get to grip with, trying to figure out who is who. But...Man....what an ending!!!! Epic.
